WAY faster than a MUCH larger company.
Meta needs to take notes cause Flipboard is doing AP the right way!

@BeAware Not to mention they're doing with an *existing* service, not one from scratch. Kudos to @Flipboard on all of this

@quillmatiq @Flipboard facts!
This is pretty great.
I still have slight reservations on the whole "opt-in" thing, but with the way Flipboard has been informing their users regarding how Fedi works, I don't feel it's as big of an issue as Threads' opt-in because they barely discuss it.

@BeAware And with their latest update, you can follow Fediverse users *without* needing to federate - you only need to federate if you want to engage. It's a really cool way to let people dip their toes into this world without needing to fully commit on day one.

@quillmatiq I do worry a bit about that because if it doesn't *show* those follows, it could be lambasted by wider Fedi.
Though, ill hold my thoughts till I know more.
I doubt I'm gonna be anyone's first follow there.

@BeAware How can I follow Pennsylvania topics on flipboard. Is there a way yet?

@Sibshops good question. Maybe @Flipboard can help?

@BeAware @Sibshops @Flipboard topics are not followable in the fediverse. Some of our users (e.g. publishers and creators) are followable and their magazines. We do offer local news publishers like @SpotlightPA and @PennLivedotcom. The challenge with topics is that they are algorithmic from many non-federated sources so a follow action doesn't make much sense (because the items can change all the time and disappear, re-appear ... it is not follow timeline based). We've had some ideas on how to make it more direct, but not yet ventured down that path. Great question!

@BeAware @quillmatiq They already did it wrong when that POS TDF "The Daily Fediverse" account followed EVERY visible account with over a 100 followers last weekend. As the first time many even heard about whatever the F. Flipboard is.
Their posts are very keen to say they're helping to discover 'popular' accounts on Fedi, both TDF & whoever toting it otherwise.
Popular apparently = "EVERYONE with over a 100 followers", based on what they did first.
I didn't ASK to be touted to God knows who.

@ElysiaMacht @quillmatiq there's 200m people there. I assure you, many more people on Flipboard don't care about you than you not caring about them.
Their CEO is very active here and does great work to start important discussions about the future of Fedi.

@BeAware Precisely the point. Did we ASK to be even potentially blasted in front of 200 million people, never before even heard of, just because some Greg behind the TDF account decided to write some program to grab all the accounts off Public timelines, or whatever it was?
The assumption that social media equals automatically trying to get the highest number of eyes on whatever random nonsense you post is flawed. Someone else deciding what we want doesn't work, and was the first move seen.

@ElysiaMacht your profile is set to public.
There's protections against these things for this reason.

@BeAware There are discoverability limitations. Most ordinary random people expect to remain small & uninteresting. I'm not included in searches. There are some 200 followers & I block-kick out 99% of new accounts trying to follow me, vetting even the ones that do get a pass. ️
I don't have controlled follows because executive dysfunction & other things would then mean no one ever getting to follow me again. Everybody would sit in limbo waiting to be cleared or rejected. 🧿

@ElysiaMacht and that's valid. However, you have to see the reality that those options do exist and even then, if you get followed by someone you don't like, you can just block them and be on your way.
I just don't see the benefit of rallying against 200m people just because they're on a corporate owned platform, especially when the corporate owned platform is run by such a seemingly good person as Mike McCue. I urge you to listen to his podcast DotSocial. He discusses very important topics weekly with other leaders in this space and his most recent is moderation.
Mike and I are mutuals, he's a very good dude and I think you should give Flipboard a chance in terms of it's federation. Most people there only seem to want to share stuff, just like us.
