I feel that every time I login to Fedi these days, there's yet another scheme to get people to dump money into a project for "the growth of the Fediverse" yet we have yet to see any results and the things they're doing seem shady as fuck to me. Yet people keep parading around like it's the best thing ever.
SWF forms and is funded by major companies like Meta and Auttomatic. Not sure how that could be a good thing. That means SWF will be financially influenced by these companies and there's nothing anybody can do to change that.
Now, Mastodon is being given to a new non-profit. They say this is to "give the power back to the people" but obviously giving ownership to a non-profit doesn't do that...it gives ownership to the non-profit and allows them to hide your donations via shady legalities to enrich themselves.
Money hungry fucks ruin everything. Change my mind.

@BeAware Definitely feeling a bit cynical about some of the recent "organizations" that have been popping up claiming to want to improve the social web, but as for Mastodon -- and I've disagreed with some of the project's decisions in the past, I wouldn't put them all in the same category.

@BeAware The bottom line is, the project is now 8 years old and there's very little indication that the users would be sold out through ads and data collection. Or maybe you have other concerns, I don't know.
Either way, we'll have to wait and see how all of this plays out in the near future!

@stefan well, I personally think that if we get sold out to ads, that'd come directly from AP since it's financially influenced by meta and Auttomatic now, and as such would make their way to mastodon eventually anyway.
With Mastodon, I'm worried that their will be more of the same inaction on critical features and issues that have already gone ignored within the 4,000+ issues on the GitHub. I feel this is a move to get Mastodon more funding, but that funding will just go to line the pockets of the people in charge of the non-profit and nothing will get done. It's a very corporate move from a "company" that claims to be "for the people".

@BeAware Valid concern, of course. Let's just wait and see!

@benda @stefan @BeAware Hello from my days-old #GoToSocial single-user instance
There are a few features it is lagging behind on compared to Mastodon (for example: post scheduling and push notifications) but all things considered it's been a good experience so far!
