Am I doing it wrong or the entire Fediverse is saturated with US politics and sharing and highlighting negativity?

Am I doing it wrong or the entire Fediverse is saturated with US politics and sharing and highlighting negativity? Can someone please show me to the quiet corner where regular people come to chill and share things they like and enjoy instead? #uspolitics #fediverse

@maxishere well, considering that there's no algorithm and you follow only the people who's type of content you enjoy seeing, have you considered that you followed too many people that are posting about US politics?
Also, perhaps you can find some common keyword in their posts that you can filter, making you experience better without having to unfollow many people?
Just throwing some ideas to help better your Fedi experience.

@BeAware created this account yesterday. Never really had social media before and don’t live in the US. I’m just trying find my way around. I guess the “for you” is randomly generated for me. Also have to mention that the initial recommended follows contained some definitely illegal and inhumane accounts with no way to refresh or get a set of new ones. I deleted multiple accounts and even used various proxies/devices still got the same results. Off to a dodgy start.

@maxishere you should definitely report those accounts and if your instance admins don't take care of them, I'd consider moving to a more generalized instance like https://mstdn.social

@BeAware I started with an account on the general main server. It was promoted on the setup page and had enough followers to make me think this entire platform was used for that kind of content. Sickening. I purged the account the email address and the VM I was running on. Thought a lot about reporting but I just wanted no part of anything to do with it.

@maxishere if you don't report, the admins/moderators might not even know it exists because if an admin doesn't see it with their own eyes, they rely on user reports.
There's no automated moderation on the Fediverse.
Yes, there is that type of content here, but if you're on a reputable instance, you shouldn't see much of it. It's the job of each instance's admins/moderators to clean that stuff up for their users.
Unfortunately, some do not.

@BeAware I believe that whole instance was infested and that’s all it was for. Did a little bit of research and found out I can’t do much if it’s the entire server. I could be wrong?

@maxishere yeah, if it's the entire server, there's not much you can do. I'm not sure how you ended up on one of those types of servers through the main app though, as far as I knew, it recommended mastodon.social which DOES have slight moderation issues every now and then, but they definitely shouldn't have illegal stuff willy nilly.
