I’d been trying to think about how Substack managed to centralize blogging/newsletters, but I realized... It’s not just brand recognition. It’s email. With most people not using RSS, email is the only way to push updates to people. But unlike RSS, sending bulk emails costs money. So you either pay to do it, or you use a VC funded service like Substack that can afford to lose money on every one of its free newsletters.
