Since Fediverse works by follow relationships, there's a chance that if you don't follow back, their posts will never reach your instance if nobody else on your instance is following them.
This is not like corporate social media. Following and boosting is how Fedi posts go around and if someone posts or boosts too much, you can always mute them for a specific set of time and have filters if they talk about topics you don't enjoy.
Follow, follow, follow. You can always unfollow if it's too much.
