@millie so....? Fedi as a whole is opt-out. It'll work like everything else here...

Opt-out Fedi? I mean.. I guess that we end up federating with everyone until we don't
but still, it feels more like opt-in, as we chose to be on this network in the first place
I don't oppose to the idea of connecting to other platforms, in fact, I'm happy that solutions for that exist, but it's never right to force everyone into it, quoting some techbros, sort of:
"if we didn't do opt-out, no one would join", which is a sign of a bad product
most people left mainstream social media for an alternative that seemed.. better, if I wanted to be on Twitter, or Twitter 2.0, I'd have made an account there. But that's beside the point.
Last time I checked, these bridges and Fedi scrapers were in a way forcing everyone into it, I didn't opt-in to having my Fedi profile on Bluesky, never did I consent to it, but they'd do it anyway
I guess that there's something to do with etiquette too, Fedi has these sort of standards which by we abide and follow (the network isn't profit, so it's safe to assume that the majority isn't using huge chunks of personal data for profit-purposes, or ML training even)
it's been a while since that I read (in this example) Bluesky's TOS and privacy terms, but they're most likely using your data, and when my profile is forced into the service, it is inherently once more being used for things I didn't consent to
I'm not too sure that I make much sense, it's late, but hopefully I do -

@millie You're on another platform by virtue of being on Fedi. You don't know any of the 20,000+ admins or what their policies, terms or conditions are. It's unreasonable to be knowledgeable of such things.
I don't opt-in to anyone's posts besides the 800 or so that I follow, yet I can see them as long as they are set to public and I don't opt--out (blocking them). The same can be said for every single Fedi instance, they can see your posts by default unless you block them.
A company that you don't know could very well be gobbling up our data and we might not ever know because there's 20,000+ instances here and new ones every day.
Not to mention that Threads is connected, yet people seem just fine blocking them and moving on instead of rallying against them.
Is that because it's easier to force a single user to change course because of harassment regarding a feature that Fedi as a whole doesn't even have?
It's very weird to have double standards in any case.
