    Please don't make me regret posting this, but there is no moral superiority in having closed registrations on your fedi server. If everyone had closed registrations all the time, that would make this place a digital gated community. We're not really beating the fedi HOA allegations when people advocate for that outcome.

      Your server should have an actual articulated policy for new user registrations, and it should account for the kind of community you are and want to be, and the resources you have available.

      Some servers need to be open to the public. That's how people join. And if people can't join, then this place is already dead.

      And some servers shouldn't be open, because it comes with a level of responsibility that they just can't meet.

          @julian Yeah, for backends that have it, that kind of feature is one of the resources they have available, and the policy should reflect that.

            @jenniferplusplus @julian

            I think Pixelfed has such an option? I ran into it on one instance move. Couldn't post for first 2 days.

            I do agree that whatever the sign-up policy/new user policy is, it should be articulated, and supported. i wish Mastodon had a little more configurability to the front page (and the damned invitation generation). If it was quite clear that "Yay! you've signed up! Here's a couple more things to know ... ", then a little more friction doesn't feel quite so hostile.
