Fediverse ≠ Signal.
This is Social Media.
If your posts are set to public, you should have exactly 0% sense of privacy here.
There's 20,000+ instances with more every single day that could be doing anything they want with your posts.
Furthermore, if you're on Mastodon, your account has an RSS feed attached that someone could be reading, completely without your knowledge.
Fediverse isn't some sort of safe haven for privacy. Not sure where that idea came from, but it's completely false.

@BeAware It should also be assumed that your instance admin can read anything you put on Mastodon, private or otherwise. So if you’re not your own admin just keep that in mind.

@BeAware That includes the unlisted posts, too, doesn't it? I also wonder if this is why some people ar hesitant to jon the fedi because it's "too" open and doesn't have "enough standardization." )Granted, We're not some of those.

@the_spc well, that depends on your own view of "public".
Unlisted posts don't go to the public timelines like the local timeline or federated timeline.
However, if you go to your profile, those unlisted posts are still publicly visible to anyone that visits it, on the web or any of the apps.
The only way to make your posts private are to set them to followers only. Even then, if one of your followers reports your posts, the admins could see them.

@BeAware if you want privacy go give someone a cipher on a piece of paper and hope they are good at them

@Tengohipo facts. Or use signal or session.
There's very limited places with privacy on the internet.
I've even been informed that there's Fedi software that can read followers only posts with MRF policies, like Pleroma.

@BeAware @Tengohipo Which I know at learst one person with a single-use instance uses. I don't even want to know how that sort of software works. I liike my smaller instances thanks; I'm not interested in spinning out my own right now.

@the_spc @Tengohipo yeah... Pleroma got some very sus development decisions.
Mastodon is *okay* if you're okay with "out of sight, out of mind" for a single user instance.
However, if you want to know of all of the bad stuff that could possibly be on your instance, Mastodon is not the way to go.
There's no automated moderation on Mastodon. It's all done through user reports or an actual admin or moderator viewing the posts themselves.️
I've hated this fact forever now and is probably the reason that the Mastodon CEO personally blocked me. I hurt his poor wittle feewings.

@BeAware @Tengohipo Lol there's a CEO for that one? Yeah, you probably did. Oh well. Let's just call the wambulance and get it over with.

@the_spc @Tengohipo Yea. Unfortunately Mastodon has gotten "big" enough to make a company.
They only have a few paid employees but since it's a company, he calls himself CEO.
I say unfortunately, because if Mastodon is the only software here, then we're just back on Twitter with different asshole to sink the ship.
He already does stuff like "limit" users who discuss the side of the Israel/Palestine war that he's not on. I can't imagine what he'd do if he had complete control and influence over Fedi.️
