    There's some discussion in the Norwegian part of the fediverse on what fediverse instance we should recommend local organisations to join.

    On the one side there are local instances like snabelen.no, fribygda.no and oslo.town run by individual enthusiasts.

    On the other side there are large, reliable, international instances like mastodon.social and vivaldi.social.

    I think more organisations would prefer to join the latter for reliability and looking more professional. The domain names also sound more neutral. But if they choose the former (snabelen.no / fribygda.no / oslo.town) it would be much easier for them to find their target audience.

    I assume this is a problem in other countries as well.
    How do you approach this?

      @aha

      Governments and departments should *really* be encouraged to operate for themselves, though that's another layer of tough.

      For local orgs/NGOs, unless there is a stable server that aligns with them locally, I'd suggest looking for an international server that aligns with them *topically*, rather than one of the huge general purpose ones where they can find themselves lost and/or spammed out of having any signal.

      Or get ONE of them to step up and start one as a collective.

        I completely agreee that they should run use their own domain. That's hopefully going to be more common when the fediverse grows more mature.

        Topically is a good idea. But it's still relevant how the instance is run. A science related instance will still seem risky if it's run by a single enthusiast. And finding your local target audience can still be an issue.
