I'm seeing a lot of conversation around usernames and the implementation of reserved words or profanity/harmful language filters.

This ties in to to a soon-to-be-available feature in Mastodon that will enable rules to proactively moderate account usernames.

The IFTAS Community Library has a reserved words resource page at https://about.iftas.org/library/reserved-words-resources/

As with all moderation tools, all friction is good friction, nothing is perfect. Used well, reserved word rules are a vital tool in the toolkit.

@iftas Most scammers and propaganda accounts use absolutely harmless normal names. And very kind and lovely activists for democracy write 'f* nazis' in their account names. I see problems for such filters ...

@llanciawn for sure, and you'll note there are multilingual sources available, but was there something specific you wanted to call out? And if you have links to add to that page please send them over 👍

@NatureMC again, nothing is perfect, all friction is good friction. The guidance offers plenty of context on known issues and potential problems.

@iftas I don't know about links but I can give you an example. 'Fag' means something totally different in English from American. I was chastised on Twitter for using the word correctly in an English context, a clear public school context; but the moderation was incapable of understanding.

@llanciawn as a brit myself I understand the issue. It can be tricky to bring local culture into a global space, or maybe from your anecdote a US space. The hallmark of the fediverse is local governance, so hopefully this can be mitigated by joining a set ice provider that shares your sensibilities and culture.

@iftas I'd sooner the moderators were more broadly educated.
