@scott activitypub is largely not relevant here, i'm talking about activitystreams as a document format. of course i don't see a rush to replace what is basically just "HTTP POST inbox + GET outbox". but 20 years from now the documents we pass around might not be primarily under the purview of the W3C group
this is especially a concern if you think about some common complaints by implementers -- they don't understand JSON-LD, so therefore they don't fully understand extensions.

@scott actually, looking at the extensibility story of fedi, for the subset of fedi that is LD-unaware at least, there is a dependence on everyone using the same shorthand terms. if i were to use a different term, or a prefixed term, or the full iri, then i would not be understood.
the way you force people to use the same shorthand terms is to force people to share a context. this is why the https://swicg.github.io/extensions-policy/ was written -- and the SocialWG or SocialCG becomes that WHATWG-like entity.

@scott so on further reflection, in some ways, the thing i was shitposting about might actually come to pass sooner than 20 years.
