I think the vast majority of fediverse users will sort by All or New primarily. If we wanted to live by the algorithm we would not be here.

TBH, I would not be surprised if the moderators weren't properly vetting ages of the girls who appeared in many of the images. I understand the desire for an amateur porn network, but if the cost of that is enabling pedophilia and human trafficking then it can never be allowed.

Sort by all, block communities you don’t like. It’s your algorithm, not theirs.

Can somebody remind me about how this works again on the fediverse please? When a federated server goes down, does its content and comments - which presumably were circulated to other federated servers - still exist? Can you do something like a raid parity reconstruction?

The posts and comments can still be seen across the Fediverse. Images and videos are going to depend, your instance may have cached it, or maybe the post was to externally hosted media. In these cases the media will persist. However in the majority of cases the photos and videos were uploaded directly and will be lost.

For example: [NSFW, obviously] https://thelemmy.club/c/boobs@lemmynsfw.com?dataType=Post&sort=TopAll (your instance may be automatically translating that link)

It appears that nothing is wrong... Other than there's no new content.

Actually the lemmynsfw image servers appear to be up for now. So if anyone wants to archive do it now.

This part worries me. Do we know where the server was located? Any chance they were arrested for the site breaking some law? I hope they are okay, whatever happened.

The current way the fediverse exists is all the posts and users only really exist on the host domain. So if it goes down everything is effectively lost. It might exist briefly on some servers, but it takes manual intervention to save it, and it can't be re sent out to anyone.

I've reported a few sketchy posts to authorities, if the mods are doing there jobs then nothing bad will come of it.

It was more of an analogy to how we consume our media and why. The almighty Algorithm and no algorithm at all being two extremes, we're closer to the latter.
