I.e., they don't wan to replace GitHub. They want there to be many code-forges out there, including them.
I agree with this goal.
But — I think until we (at least) have federated pull-requests, this is less likely to happen.
And, I do know that there is an effort to add ActivityPub support to Forgejo, Gitea, and others.
I think ForgeFed is important for this goal

essentially mail patch (with a little better ux hopefully) could already be classified as federated pull requests, or is that unreasonable?
I've been ranting that I want good local tooling instead of centralization for decades, but there's shades of grey between fully localized and fully centralized obviously.
