Yeah, the instances that are most dedicated to fighting fascism and providing a safe space for lgbtqi+ and other marginalized groups are the "toxic" ones. Those are the instances that need to be contained so you can block them, huh? HMMMMMM....

I think I'll just stop using Lemmy when this instance shuts down ...and nothing of value will be lost.

It's a totally different software project. Written in Python as opposed to Rust (programming language used for Lemmy). But it is also part of the fediverse with ActivityPub compatibility, so you can easily browse and subscribe to Lemmy communities and content from PieFed and vice versa. https://piefed.social/ is the original PieFed instance.
  • Finally, we know what ActivityPub is!

I don't think so. The Dutch Republic (17th century) is widely regarded by economic historians as the first capitalist economy in practice. It was wildly successful and generated massive quality of life improvements across the nation. Industrial revolution followed soon afterwards, which marked the transition in Britain to "modern capitalism." This saw the greatest leap in technological innovation, lifespan, food, medicine, etc, in human history. No system is perfect and one could point to many imperfections, but I see few notable systemic failures of capitalism along the way. It seems to rarely give rise to dictators and famine, as we see with states which attempt communism. On the contrary. Capitalist nations tend almost universally towards increased rights for women and minorities, democracy, and scientific pursuits. To steelman your position, a notable exception could be the Weimar Republic. However I would credit their hyperinflation to unsustainable debt burdens placed on them by other nations following WW1, forcing them to print currency unsustainably, thereby hyperinflating the Papiermark.

I am not new to having a handful of alts. I had a handful back in Reddit. But my journey here has been entertainingly different: my lemmy world account is where I started. I was fresh off the boat (from Reddit). I wanted a Reddit-like experience and I got it. kbin was more out of curiosity, I checked it out and was immediately disoriented. I still liked what I saw, and hoped it'd develop further. my lemm.ee account was more out of necessity. It was created during the lemmy world outages, and was meant as a lifeboat. @sunaurus@lemm.ee's transparency and even-keeled decision-making during the Facebook/Meta Threads debacle won me over. It has since been my main. my dbzer0 account was born when lemmy world took action against certain communities. I was struck by dbzer0's principles. It became my go-to alt for tech and tech-adjacent interests. Of course I have an NSFW alt, which I shall never name. I'm pretty vanilla, but... I explored what piefed.social is all about and made an account there. It reminded me of kbin for some reason. And then this one. I still hope this is the last time I'd ever have to make an alt. To think that when I made my lemm.ee acount, I was so against the idea of having too many alts. I now have seven!

One thing I think we can all agree on is that strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. [image: giphy.gif]

At the cost of manual curation, meaning the largest instances such as Lemmy.World had to be defederated. So... they choose quality (niceness) over quantity. And it works:-).

    ?
Instance blocks only block posts anyway.
  • There's as little incentive to host a Lemmy instance.

If it's easy to self host, why is there none publicly available?
