@djsundog I really associate the phrase "information overload" with the six months after I graduated college and the studio apartment I moved into. I only connected my little black and white TV to the cable because I was hoping it would work as an antenna but I discovered it hadn't been turned off. I'd never lived anywhere with cable before and suddenly I had CNN. The aftermath of Tianenmen Square was still being understood. The Bay Area got hit by the Loma Prieta earthquake. The Berlin Wall fell. The Soviet Union collapsed. I watched a firing squad kill the Dictator of Romania. I'd get home from one of my two jobs and immediately turn it on to see what I'd missed.And then one day I picked up my phone to make a call. But it didn't go through. Instead I found myself in this amazing liminal telephone netherworld where I could hear a dozen or more conversations, all happening at once, against a background of electronic beeps. Just as I'd start to follow a couple sentences of one call it would vanish and its place be taken by another call. I sat listening to it for half an hour while trying to figure out a way to route the signal into my four-track cassette but couldn't get it to work.Having my first taste of 24-hour news was as earthshaking as the events it was covering. And that phone call became my personal metaphor for what it felt like.Then I got a dial up modem...

@dansup Any "starter pack" concept implemented on the fediverse should definitely be opt-in rather than opt-out. Don't distribute anyone's handle in a starter pack until they've explicitly okay'd their presence there.But apart from the abusive potential, there are at least two other potential hazards:1. Poweruser creation: It's important to recognize that starter packs not only help new users find people to follow, they also expand the audience and influence of the people included on those lists. Accounts that end up on multiple starter packs will tend to amass large followings, giving them broader reach and greater pull on the entire network. That's a dynamic that we should be circumspect about unleashing.2. Gatekeeping: Similarly, if some people benefit disproportionately from inclusion on starter packs, others can be undercut by their exclusion from those lists. For example: A popular starter pack for astronomers could exclude an astronomer who disagrees with one of the maintainer's pet theories. The effect would be to marginalize a minority position on the network, while growing the following for the maintainer's preferred position.

this mostly came about when i was considering the note vs article distinction years ago, where one of the distinctions was “a paragraph in length” versus “multiple paragraphs”. taking away the ability to do line breaks is certainly one way to accomplish that. you can post walls of text, but everyone will hate you for it because no one wants to read it

I had it for two days because we had friends from America visiting and it was the only thing they could use internationally. Don't know why they couldn't just call me. As soon as I found them at the airport, I uninstalled it.

@evan i’m not sure the question makes sense unless you share the abstraction of a “home timeline”, but my mental model is that the “home timeline” is roughly analogous to combining your inbox and outbox, then filtering for Create/Announce specifically.(similarly, the “notifications timeline” is roughly analogous to filtering your inbox for Like/Announce where the object.attributedTo is yourself, plus filtering your inbox for Create where to/cc includes yourself.)

like something? share it with your friends. not supposed to? who says? who cares? share it with your friends anyway.hate something? do not share it with your friends. not to mock it. not to shame it. just don't share it. it's way simpler and is more effective at making the thing you hate not a thing as much.all of this, everything we deal with, is about people interacting with people, sometimes by choice, sometimes out of necessity, sometimes under threat of violence. you're your best advocate in deciding how your side of that interaction is going to go, not the person on the other side.

looks like some weird mkinitcpio issue where my mkinitcpio.conf was reset? i fixed it and then found out the built initramfs and kernel weren't being copied to my efi boot partition correctly, so i fixed that. i'm back online, i just lost like the past 19 hours of data which is all told not the worst thing in the world i guess. the only thing i would have done differently knowing what i know now is i would have made a backup before trying to fix stuff, or i would have never restored the 19h ago.

unfortunately a lot of fedi is not doing enough to be different than twitter either, it seems.

@ruario Ah, so _that_ was indeed the problem! Last Sunday, my sibling and I assembled our very first home-built computer. We installed Bazzite Linux, and after setting it up, the very first application we installed for it was Vivaldi.It crashed a few times while we went through the welcome page. But after a while, I figured the browser import step was probably the cause since it was installed through Flatpak, so we skipped ahead (and voila, no more crash).

That's why i haven't been around much.And I'm not entirely sure which would happen first honestly.To me, it's all just a big waiting game and from this side, it feels like shit because for AP users, we'd be losing something we had, freedom from corporate control.BlueSky I feel is a bit different because it's always been corporate control. It's just a matter of when that corporation will decide to make the whole protocol worse for the sake of profit. Which of course is where the two issues are pretty much the same.

I guess I'm not typical. A boomer that started swinging to the right around age 40. Then I spent a number of years in the belly of the capitalist beast and started smoking the imaginary money -- and witnessed first hand the consequences. Around y2k I was asked to lay off half my team because we failed to meet numbers, but couldn't tell them until the SWAT team was in place. This flipped a switch in my brain. Now I'm pushing 70 and much further to the left than most people here. We need to remove the oligarchs and take back our planet; completely reject their NLP brain-washing (masquerading as brand and ego loyalty), or there is no future for any of us of our offspring.

#Bluesky has starter packs to help people find interesting accounts. I built one with accounts from #Mastodon, that can be followed from there (thx @bsky.brid.gy).
