I think so... the third-party won't see the private responses in-between unless the server happens to know about them (in which case they can either be omitted or a placeholder shown in its place). In the case of this instance, I don't see the private responses in between and so I can't traverse up the chain to the parent, but I think that is ok... system working as intended.

@raphael no i'm more talking about explicit contexts and separation of concerns. it's less about discovering people (although that's part of it). the main thrust of this is that "globally" is the wrong way to look at it, and we should instead try to build more tangible localities. i don't *want* to talk to everyone on earth. in fact, i want to get away from certain people! the lines along which fedi are split are the wrong lines to be drawing.

@decay i just made a bunch of attempted search requests which probably should show up as 403 for you or possibly idk what else gts logs might show over http logs. i'm around for the next few hours if you're free to debug

@ignaloidas idk i'm not sure about that, it's stuff that when i search for it in youtube music, it just doesn't come up at all. maybe if i'm lucky someone has uploaded a video with the entire album, but that doesn't help with wanting to add a specific track to a playlist

@jens admittedly this is interesting but what i am really getting at is how to layer metadata from different sources onto the same "content" -- http headers, rdf statements, and so on, what is the atomic unit of content, that kind of thing. the content's embedded metadata might conflict with the external metadata, so which one do you trust? and how do you deal with potentially multiple nested layers of container formats? (plaintext message in an html document in an http message in a text file)

@morph @DavidBHimself I sit at more than 20 gb with user profile pics and headers.I follow over 1000 people. Things get quite hefty really quickly.I'm probably just not knowledgeable enough tbh, I'd rather join someone that knows more of what they're doing so I don't have to worry about the background stuffs.

(Thanks @beaware@social.beaware.live for bringing this to my attention) You're right, our website is more about our self-service hosting option, and that's because that's what pays our day-to-day bills. It's an unfortunate reality of the open-source development model. The project itself is licensed under GPLv3 and has always been this way. Your concerns over Automattic are well-founded and they also worry me. That said, NodeBB is free and open-source, and you are encouraged to self-host it. That has been our mantra from day one, and still remains that way today.

To be clear, lots of blame to hand to Google in this duopoly, but they've been *relatively* better on RCS

@xinit there's a way but it takes a lot of organization and the rich people don't like it
