I don't use social media in an attempt to become famous or become an "infleuncer".

I deleted my Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn accounts and went all in on Mastodon. Best decision ever. Fuck that shit.

The app I’m using (the mastodon app) doesn’t seem super reliable so there are days I can’t load it on my phone (and I know I should try a different app but I haven’t). Mostly I don’t feel really connected here, which is mostly because I don’t interact regularly. But it just hasn’t replaced the feeling of friends and connection I had on fb. (I won’t go back to Facebook though.)

@LianaBrooks Yep, it's enough. I can connect with local people and far away people who share interests. It's true there's a lack of diversity, and that makes it less engaging for me, but I view that as a plus because there are things I'd like to do outside of cyberspace, and this being somewhat less engaging is a feature not a bug.

@LianaBrooks primary? It's my *only* social media (unless you count Signal, Matrix, or email).

Once I got settled on Mastodon, I poisoned and deleted my last remaining social accounts.

I have zero regrets.

@LianaBrooks@mastodon.online I've been on the Fedi, primarily not mastodon, for several years now and do not have a social media presence outside of the Fediverse.

I like it here.

I am not a person who would normally be targeted for harassment so my experience has been pretty pleasant, but I know there's weird ass gatekeepers around this that seem to actively want to drive away non-white and queer folks - a thing that can be largely invisible to anyone but the target because of the structure of Mastodon/ActivityPub. That's a real big problem for this to become A Thing in the culture - for it to get that far, I'd need to be able to invite my MIL and wife and have them have completely different, but very pleasant experiences rather than the current experience it is now.

I'm wondering if you have tried following/searching by tags related to your interests. That's how I usually find my people.
