    One of the pitches that is being made about decentralized social media is that it can be censorship resistant.

    Iran has been in a situation of maximum censorship for days now, as they simply turned off all communication services.

    How would social media look like that could still be functional in these circumstances? There is a need!

    Running ActivityPub over packet radio seems a stretch ... Running AtProto at all seems an even bigger stretch.

    Where does censorship resistance start and end?

      @j12t

      In the 1980s we ran email bridged by overnight FidoNet long-distance exchanges, and for years my home access was modem-connected packet relays. You may not be playing Fortnite, but you can still exchange data.

          @j12t

          becoming relevant HERE. It's been survival in the Third World all along. At Oka, Kanehsatà:ke Resistance threw cassette tapes over the army barracades. Cuba would smuggle tapes in fishing boats. Internet finds a way 😅

          I once heard WWI described as Euro Colonialism come home to roost. WWIII might be Globalization's equivalent?

            @j12t

            Since #ActivityPub is essentially a type of email, I can see no reason why it wouldn't be exchangeable the way we did UUCP, perfectly viable via carrier pigeon or a van full of tapes.
