I don't go on reddit anymore but during the 3rd party app shift a lot of people complained about not knowing exactly where to sign up because they didnt understand piefed.social, would be able to see and respond to the same content as lemmy.world. Then people would scare them because they would say things like well this instance is all blank. ML is only Marxist Leninists and whatever else. Yet if users just signed up on .ml, .world, . whereever, they would have learned everything they wanted to in a short amount of time and subs would be more active with users so the whole "well they don't have niche things" complaint would have fizzled out rather quickly. And likely would have got a steady stream of users over time.

That's not what everyone wants granted, but in my experience setting up an account, using it and then finding an instance or 2 to settle in was simple. (Then you flip between them in your chosen app, which would have more funding and support do to more user base)

iirc, he was modded by the actual sub creator as a joke. What's damning is just how long that sub was allowed to survive, and that it took news coverage to shut it down.

Not snappy enough for a meme though, and welcomes the argument he somehow didn't know.

Yeah, a lot of people are "scared off" by all that talk about instances. If people knew that it didn't matter in terms of functionality and everyday use it would be a lot easier, perhaps.

Maybe it's a matter of us trying to distinguish between "infrastructure" and the use of that same said "infrastructure "?

Although, saying what instance one signs to doesn't matter would be lying. But saying it won't make much difference in terms of where one can go is true. Well, unless it is a problematic instance and the others defederate from it. See? This is why it ends up being complicated to explain when people don't know how it is supposed to function.

I think the important thing would be to educate people on federation and the nature of open protocols. And why it is a better shift from the current paradigm. A lot less corrupted with less perverse incentives. A return to the original promise of the internet, to be more fair.

I've been here for a while, and now I'm on piefed.social after the shutdown of lemm.ee. I can say the entirety of this space we're on is growing. Slowly, but it is.

I agree it does matter to a degree, like if you wound up on Hexbear you would be blocked from accessing some things. That said.. if people were recommending users just joined some of the larger instances like world/ml and then spread out they would figure it out for themselves. Personally I started on .ml, made an account on .ca/.world, then found dbzer0. I also have a Hexbear account I haven't logged into in months, because I thought it would be interesting to learn what that whole culture was about.

At the end of the day I stay on dbzer0 and world.. but that's years of use that narrowed me down to that.

Wow. You've been busy exploring these corners. That's great.

I think for the most part the .ml problem these days is a bit blown out of proportion. I've just been here for a couple of years so the worst that I heard of predates my time. Because a lot of the people registered there are not Tankies and openly condemn those views. But... I still don't follow more than one or two communities from there because the mods were indeed a lot of the times part of that famously problematic side of it.

But hey, if it isn't too much to ask, could you explain to me what the hell happened with Hexbear? I read some complaints but from my interactions with it, I never noticed anything that I could point out?

Like .world has a lot of those 1 day old accounts, the quick registrations for trolling and harassment that they take too long to squash. And lately it has been nonstop.

But Hexbear, I'm completely clueless of what happened...

Hexbear, I’m completely clueless of what happened

Hexbear came from the Chapo subreddit, a subreddit about the podcast, that became a general left space, and was banned because of it. HB joined Lemmy before federation was a thing. They developed their own fork of Lemmy while the Lemmy devs worked on federation, so when federation went live, HB wasn't able to federate until the HB features were brought over or brought into compliance with the main branch.

During this time, HB went through a lot of sessions where they figured out the correct opinion on trans people, imperialism, outdoor cats, etc.

Before HB federated, .world "preemptively defederated hexbear as a last resort", and people on .world have been making whatever shit up about them ever since.

Shortly after federation, libs were ridiculed for saying ridiculous things, mostly about America's historical role in the world and the reality of places America doesn't like. They responded mostly clipping things out of context in places where HB users wouldn't see or respond, or simply making shit up and telling admins and users to block them.

At the same time, HB started defederating instances because they conflicted with HB's policy of being a safe space for BIPOC and trans users.

There are just tons of these - here is a few more.

TLDR: there is abundant evidence that Hexbear is a troll instance and it scares new people off to have to deal with them, who then ofc go to Reddit and complain how bad the Threadiverse is, thereby lessening the migration over here overall. In short, dealing with such a 4chan-like space should be opt-in rather than making people learn the hard way.

Hexbear users will send you a picture of literal pig shit if you disagree with their opinions on China, like by believing the uyghur genocide exists

Have you been to Urumqi or spoken to a single person who has been to Xinjiang? I have, and I should be back there before Christmas depending on how things work out. Claiming theres a genocide going on there is as worthy of ridicule as claiming Portland is a warzone.

If Hexbear users had correct opinions on imperialism they wouldn't "um ackshually" when someone says "free Hong Kong"

The US is actually committing a genocide right now. Mostly against immigrants.

Additional context appreciated, I'm still not going to stop ripping on his despite less ammo though. Just have to re-jig some of the insults is all.
