We lost a real one

As an instance admin myself, I'm so confused... If you went through the effort of setting up an instance, the effort of transferring all the access and stuff to someone else would be nothing. Just seems super weird to disappear without a trace and without handing it over to someone else.
They could be dead. Or imprisoned. Or just not interested anymore.

Dude I'm actively seeking to limit my usage of porn, respectfully go fuck yourself. I won't miss regularly seeing Lemmy porn.
Edit: ITT lotta people who are very sensitive about their porn going away.
Hey, good on you for trying to make your situation better. I hope you're doing it for the right reasons , instead of swallowing the bullshit that they peddle to control people (being concerned about masturbating too much/intrusive fantasies VS "not jerking off will get you babes and give you superpowers")
However, giving up on the NSFW stuff (some of which won't be lewd) is the price you have to pay. the NSFW thing is a social construct and courtesy , and is 95% lewd shit anyway, so you're not exactly missing out on much.

I mean there's a high chance it also got ransomwared.

Cold shower might be more appropriate, eh?
Yeah that's true.

a significant number of us are permanently banned from reddit for whatever reason
New email account, a VPN or new IP, new cookies, they can't actually ban a person.
But screw reddit. People need to get off it.
We need a corp BS free, free speech, public platform.

It takes as much effort as that comment did.

All my nudes gone.

️If you want to preserve lemmy content launch your own instance and cache it yourself. If you want to control your own communities, launch your own instance and host it yourself.

All my nudes gone.
Fuck! My first account was on lemmy.ee which passed away a few months ago. My second account was on lemmynsfw thinking the presence of porn would be a guarantee of its sustainability. It's like been banned twice from Reddit.

Next the domain name will be for sale for like $2500. lmao
Hexbear flashbacks
I did some rough math on this and that would be the least of the worries. The cost of hosting a nsfw instance would easily be $500-$1000 per month.
Which leaves me wondering if part of it going down was funding.

Thing is, there are NSFW things that aren't porn. Seems like a decent amount of them on Lemmy. I shouldn't need to filter out all NSFW simply because there's a shotgun blast of new porn communities every month. I ended up just blocking every one I see, simply because that's not what I'm on Lemmy for.
Truth be told, I won't miss it.
You can block instances instead of whining about them.

Wait, what happened?

Real question - how does one host a Lemmy that accepts all sorts of content without having to keep constant tabs on it?
Like, if we did sprinkle nsfw content throughout dozens of Lemmy servers?
I'm asking this because I hosted a pixelfed server one time, allowed thousand users, and those abuse reports became hard on my soul. Some were pretty vanilla nsfw. But some required me to forward it to 3-letter agencies in the States. And while I'm not a fan of talking to the cops, I'm also not a fan of awful shit on my server.

All my nudes gone.
I liked leaving non sexual comments in the NSFW content. Like I would comment on the room decor.
-
Your point of view here is always wrong. You ALWAYS protect access to the NSFW content regardless of your own frequency of use, because the nut jobs always come for it first, and you're not far after.

All my nudes gone.
https://docs.lemmynsfw.com/ is still up but not updated in 2 years. That's hosted separately on GitHub Pages though, we just know the domain owner is the same

That meme about the cabinets behind the girl with the milk, that was your fault?

Don't make your porn addiction our problem. You can disable show NSFW or block instances and/or communities. You can also switch to an instance like programming.dev which hides pornographic communities by default. You have to manually subscribe to them to see them. Tons of things you can do instead.

That just isn't how the fediverse works. It exists in the moment. If you want it to persist you need to back it up or figure out a plan. Just expecting someone to put up as server for you and leave it up forever is fantasy thinking. Doing it yourself can involve teaming up with people to launch instances or pay for service. The people who don't pay it forward and contribute are leeches, not community members.
