when I look at mastodon, no matter how much I tune the filter, 20-40% of the feed is tech posts I don’t understand

if I didn’t follow people who make or share computer posts I would miss a lot of great people. There is just no way to tune out the tech! it’s omnipresent and unfilterable

for those of us who don’t work in computers or want to work in computers, it’s a significant distraction and sort of takes attention away from things I’d rather be spending it on tbh. a sign of how hegemonic tech posting is here is that we’re supposed to tag politics so tech people can avoid them but no one ever would tag tech posts so politics people (or any other group) can avoid them

one of the saddest parts about the fediverse not getting more of twitters migrants, for me, is that there aren’t enough different types of people here to lower the ratio of tech posts in the feed

and i am NOT asking people to CW tech posts, or be ashamed about being interested in tech. i'm just kind of eulogizing a mastodon that did not come to pass and tbh may never come to pass, which is ok. is what it is

@trwnh @seachanger we can have whatever we want. We just have to build it.
