Move Slowly and Build Bridges: Mastodon, the Fediverse, and the Struggle for Democratic Social Media by @rwg

ActivityPub: Programming for the Social Web by @evan

Governable Spaces: Democratic Design for Online Life by @ntnsndr

Is that a good start already or is there something I am missing?

@chillicampari @rwg @ntnsndr More Awesome Than Money is a good read. It's about an earlier era in the social web but a lot of the vibes are there. A lot of people who went on to make ActivityPub are discussed in the book.

@chillicampari @rwg @ntnsndr my book is really a programmer's reference, but the first and last chapters are meant for all audiences.

@evan @rwg @ntnsndr yep, I sort of knew that already but it's good to have the middle part on hand too in case I need it so I don't end up in the weeds (I think the general idea will need to be flexible for different audiences).

@evan something that has come up a few times over the years is that small companies and non-profits have trouble justifying dedicating operations or development time into things like self-hosting. Many have a "no new tools" rule outside of procument windows. So I'm going to need to make a technical case also in addition to a social argument. I know there are a lot of docs now (and did self-host for a bit with @mfeilner) but books are very good to point to and say "please read this" @rwg @ntnsndr

@citc cool and thank you! Is there something I can point other people to, to learn about it? Audience ranges from non-technical to technical.

Have a look at the hubzilla web site, but personal opinion is that documentation, promotion and usage statistics is poor. Good software, but insufficient servers and only one programmer?

I could use help composing an essential Fediverse (as a topic) book reading list. I'm planning on talking to people with a variety of technical backgrounds (range and expertise) so variety is good. I haven't read any of this yet but I would read it first and either (verbally) summarise points or point people to them for more info.

So far I have on my list:

                      (continued)

@chillicampari there is this Zotero library for Fediverse research literature: https://www.zotero.org/groups/5490166/fediverse_research/

if you like, you can also add stuff there

@resieguen this is really cool and I had no idea that it exists, thank you so much! I think it's the most comprehensive listing I've seen and sorting by date is really interesting too.
