In my opinion, probably yes. If that information being made public is likely to make people feel uncomfortable, then its probably unethical.

I tend to block instances that block me, because I find it annoying to see an instance on the front page that I'm expected to look at but not allowed to interact with.

That actually does a pretty great job of getting rid of the explicit stuff. (Thanks for tagging your stuff, porn magazines!)
It does nothing for the just as NSFW anime magazines.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of NSFW that's not porn that I do want to see. Typically just some text.
On the other hand, spam bots seem to always mark their posts NSFW for some reason.

Since Lemmy is part of the Fediverse (public), I just figured everything was public such as votes and blocks.
