https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/02/bringing-quote-posts-to-mastodon/@pierrenick @MastodonEngineering I see major issues if this will stop people from linking to others' posts on demand.
Assholes will be assholes and won't be able to be called out because they'll just stop you from linking to their post.
It'll be the biggest moderation issue we've had in a long time.
Fedi moderation is traditionally done in the open while linking to the bad behavior so that other moderators have proof of the behavior in case "evidence" is requested.
This kills that. People will have to just "trust me bro" and hopefully get screenshots.

@BeAware @MastodonEngineering I have not read all the “pre-FEP” stuff (and I’m not an ActivityPub expert by any means) but I would assume it wouldn’t simply be some sort of “you can’t link to me in a message” feature, which doesn’t seem possible anyway, text is text.
But regardless, it’s a proposal process so anyone can chime in from their experiences

@pierrenick @MastodonEngineering well...I didn't just pull that idea out of a hat.
It's how threads does quote posts. Wanna link to a post on threads and that user limits who can quote post them? You ain't linking to that post.
That's why I'm worried they're just doing that.

@BeAware This is a very hard question in a decentralised network, as you can not trust any other servers. The research and pre-FEP discussion that we linked in the blog post go into more detail around those questions.

@pierrenick@renchap @pierrenick I've only had a few minutes to read over it this morning but from what I read, my concerns are exactly what is being done and will be a moderation nightmare for people that rely on crowdsourced moderation like single user instances. (Me and many others)
If I can't link to another site within my own site, then I'm out. Fedi already has a bad direct harassment problem. Not being able to call it out on the harassers demand just feels ridiculous. Not that anyone cares what one random dude does anyway. Just feels like a bad, bad move.

@BeAware @renchap @pierrenick I see no reason why you couldn't still use the current busted version of quote-posting (i.e. just post the URL to their post). You just wouldn't get a fancy auto-embedded preview of the quoted post on web. And phone apps would still resolve it like they do now.

@BeAware So far, we are not planning to forbid linking to statuses if the person refuses to be quoted. A link is not a quote. There are still a lot of open questions (like, what is the UI behaviour if you paste such a link into the composer? Maybe we should ask the user if they want to transform it into a quote?). This is something we have in mind and will continue working on it. So far we mostly focused on the ActivityPub side of things.

@RxBrad he's pretty much quelled my concerns here.
At least for now.

@renchap thanks for this. Much appreciated.
Other devs have blocked me for lesser discussions.🫡
