I sure do wish I could search the wider Fediverse without having a mastodon.social account...

@marc_w ActivityPub is an open protocol.
How is that debatable? π€¨
Regardless of what anyone wants, it's not okay to harass, threaten, or insult anyone.

@BeAware As a smaller Server, I can see the need to find new folks that have the same interests. On the other hand, I thought Fediverse was setup with Barriers to prevent folks finding too much info ya?
-

@Nox not that I'm aware of...?
What sort of barriers? As far as my experience has been, everything is open until someone takes action to stop that via blocking or defederating.

@BeAware Isn't that why the search never gets implemented completely? I tried a couple of different tools and end up just moving to different servers looking for folks.
-

@Nox Search is instance based. Every admin can choose to implement it or not and each account has options to limit their discoverability by search.
So those who don't want to be found have MANY options to limit their visibility. Whether that be by locking their account, posting with "unlisted" visibility, posting with "followers only" visibility, or turning off search discovery features.
There's no reason to harass devs of discoverability services because each person can protect themselves.
Since search is instance based, I have to go to mastodon.social to search for content i'm interested in because they're the most federated instance. It's just an annoyance.

One of the things I have to keep sheepishly explaining to the people I'm fedi-evangelizing is that "it's hard to find people you might know, but don't get discouraged..."
Yeah, that's not a particularly good way to convince people to come here when finding their friends on Blue Sky is apparently pretty easy. I'm not there so I don't know what's different, but I keep convincing people to make accounts here, only for them to quickly go dormant.
I would really like to be able to follow all the activist types I used to follow on Twitter, where I could get live-post updates on things like protests. There is very little of that here that I've been able to find.

@BeAware Someone already built it, and nobody even noticed: https://aspublic.org (seems to be broken at the moment, though)
I've seen a lot of interesting stuff in fedi, but most of it is not killed, but simply ignored.

@BeAware @rolle Definitely don't go to Signal for privacy, which literally requires phone number (insane), uses Cloudflare which makes you vulnerable to 0-click deanonymization attack, refuses to fix or acknowledge security vulnerabilities, and is centralized (lock-in). Better use SimpleX which has no unique user IDs, no accounts, and protects your meta-data on a very nice level unlike Matrix, Signal and many others
As for Fediverse, I do not know why a PUBLIC platform for SOCIAL media would have anything to do with privacy. Anonymity? Yes. Security? Please do. Privacy? Why? It's social network! I'd certainly love more discoverability features
By the way, what did @rolle do?
-
replied to catbarking@public.mitra.social last edited by
@catbarking @rolle he created a "firehose" software which basically is a "federated" timeline aggregator from what I understand.
Basically just made it so that you don't have to go to mastodon.social to see a live feed of most Fedi instances.
Not like he was taking people's posts who couldn't stop him from taking them. Just don't post with "public" setting....βοΈ

I was relieved to see how @news covered this whole ordeal yesterday. It warms my heart to know there were people who defended me and truly saw me. At the time, it felt like 90% of the Fediverse was against me. I shut the project down to avoid having my private messages flooded with hate.
Public Firehose Project Shutters After Backlash - We Distribute
In the face of public backlash, a Fediverse developer is forced to shut down a hobby project after people misunderstood what it did.

@rolle @BeAware @catbarking @news anyone who does this kind of thing is a bully, no worse than mean school children nor fascist politicians.
