if it's not meta like this, it just helps with sorting and gives the author quick feedback how many viewers didn't like it.

that's much better than mastodon or xitter, where you can just "like" and the author thinks the 20 nazis who "liked" his fascist comment mean it's well received, even though 500 viewers disliked, but didn't have a button for it and had no time to write a response.

even if 5k responses dislike it, the author won't read all of them. he just sees 50 "likes" and has no clue how many of the 5k approve or disapprove of his post.

mastodon and xitter are basically like lemmy with training wheels. everybody just gets gold medals and the fascists can use it to their advantage.
