Is this the typical behaviour of fediverse users? Posts in Apple and Nintendo communities immediately get downvoted by people disliking the companies. Can’t they just block the communities?

preferring to try to curate the fediverse at large
In my opinion, it is presumptuous and arrogant to attempt to curate the fediverse at large according to one's own preferences.

It is arrogant to think the context of a community overrides anyone's personal preferences on how to interact with the voting system.

If you're moderating a small community, downvotes can bury posts and hurt its growth.

Perhaps it's my personal bias, but I don't like the idea of hidden information. If you can't see it, it's easier to manipulate.
What if it was the opposite - all votes were shown, including who up/downvoted? From what I've noticed, people think twice before mindless downvoting if they know they can be called out for it.
Votes are public as far as the API is concerned and there are tools to show you who voted in what way.

I'm aware of lemvotes.org. However, I think this should be part of the default interface, for everyone.
In Lemmy currently this feature is exclusive to comms you moderate:
Sadly I don't expect anything similar for PieFed. I really like plenty of its features, but when it comes to vote visibility it's going the opposite direction - making them unavailable by the API instead.

making them unavailable by the API instead.
Votes are available via the API. There is a setting to limit it to your local instance. By default, they federate.

That's a rather recent change, isn't it? From what I remember the votes were cast by alternate profiles, so even if you tried to grab them from the API you wouldn't know who voted on what.

It's been around for a while, I don't remember the dates
Basically, this is what it looks like

Ah, OK. Thanks for the correction + further info!

Valve is exempt from this for some reason however. It’s more like stereotypical basement dwellers treat this like a game where you win by accumulating more imaginary internet points. This kind of tribal behaviour is why threadiverse seems to be failing but at least some people get to feel superior to others in the meantime.
Valve isn't perfect but they've gotten a lot of community good will by not being shitty and vindictive. Nintendo has been just really shitty to their own fans for a long time, with unnecessary litigation and criminal prosecution.
I do agree that tribalism is pretty extreme within the fediverse, but I also don't think that's anything new for any small internet community.

It is arrogant to think the context of a community overrides anyone's personal preferences on how to interact with the voting system.
I think there's an argument to be made though, that if you're a person who browses the "all" feed rather than subscriptions or individual communities, that there's a point where you should block a particular community you don't want to see rather than continuously downvoting it. When the content isn't harmful but you merely dislike it, it seems reasonable to expect the user to curate their experience at least a little.
-
There is also an argument that expecting everyone to agree with and follow the unwritten rules of 'voting correctly' is just a vocal minority trying to impose their will on all users.
Generally I limit to subs but browse All occasionally to find new communities. Part of this process is upvoting and down voting stuff and seeing which communities has more stuff I want and less stuff I thought was worth downvoting. I then sub or block after that point.
That is how I notice spammed slop as part of blocking a community. No, I won't be going back to remove down votes before blocking just because the community is about spamming slop and the posts fit the sub. Harm isn't a down voting requirement.
-
Jet has an automated removal bot that will nuke someone for a single down vote. Their opinion is worthless because their moderation is dog shit.
Your question made my brain hurt because I had no idea how you think my opinion did a 180 because I pointed out that you don't practice what you preach.
I'm still so curious about how you decided that this simple thought:
But the downside is that people then upvote or downvote based on their preferences, not the community’s.
somehow secretly also means “don’t ever downvote” ?

I can't explain something you made up.
My opinion is that people should vote however they want becsuse it does not hurt the fediverse, as long as each person votes once. That includes downvoting.

I didn't make this up, you wrote:

And I'm **still **baffled as to how you've come to that conclusion. The only thing you've shared is that ~20% of my votes are downvotes? Which somehow you've decided goes against this simple thought:
But the downside is that people then upvote or downvote based on their preferences, not the community’s.
So, what on Earth are you talking about?
Edit: Or, you could do the normal adult thing and just say "oh, my bad, I got confused as to whom I was responding" or "my mistake, I misread what you wrote and kind of dug in there" etc. Honestly, admitting you've made a mistake isn't a sign of weakness or stupidity, it's a sign of being a functional adult. (A valuable lesson to learn well.)

You are saying down voting is bad, yet you down vote more than me. You are a hypocrite, but I was trying to avoid saying it directly since people get butthurt about that kind of thing.
That is what I said, but apparently you can't read and thought me pointing out your hypocrisy meant my view changed.
Go upvote more stuff and improve the fediverse.

That's typical reddit behavior, many of them brought their childish habits over to the fediverse.

In Hexbear we don't have down votes, so you have to engage with someone to express disapproval
To whichever admin deleted @Nakoichi's comment for "disinformation":
Some questions about Piefed.social - Lemmy.World
I’ve been considering making the move to Piefed for a while, but I suppose there are a few things that I haven’t been able to find that I was wondering about. First, what is Piefed.social’s structural situation like? After having survived the fall of Kbin (big RIP) and seen Lemm.ee [http://Lemm.ee] fall because of admins who cannot continue for completely understandable and unavoidable personal reasons, what is Piefed’s situation there? I don’t see the list of admins on the sidebar like in Lemmy instances, do you have enough admins to weather growth? Is there a broader org you could theoretically cooperate with if there was a sudden need for admins? Second, what is Piefed’s financial situation like? I’ve seen plenty of sites, though so far no major Fediverse instances, fall because of an inability to keep donations and expenses in order. I see the donation page, but what is the financial health of the instance like? Some instances post monthly or yearly reviews of the financial situation, but if Piefed does, I don’t know where to find it. Third, what is Piefed’s position on genocide? I fucking hate that I have to ask this, but having seen too many people on the Fediverse deny the Holodomor, Uyghur genocide, etc, including the Lemmy devs themselves (who are no small part of the reason why I’m considering making the move), I don’t want to move here and then find out that the position of the admins is something horrific. I don’t expect that the admins intend to play whack-a-mole with genocide deniers themselves, since if anything that’s properly the job of moderators and communities to drive the bastards out, but simply knowing that the admins are not supporters of genocide denial would put my mind at ease a great deal. Fourth, what is the defederation policy of Piefed.social? Thank you for your time!
(lemmy.world)
Defederation - I really need to improve https://piefed.social/instances so it shows the blocked instances. Anything that is a continual moderation headache gets blocked, temporarily or otherwise. This week aaalll the spam is coming from lemmings.world so they’re out but once it dies down they’ll be back. Hexbear and lemmygrad will always be blocked and PieFed is coded to block them by default on all new instances (admins can change it). No plans to defederate lemmy.ml as I’ve built mod tools that help me find the most odious users & banned them and now it’s tolerable. lemy.lol is blocked because of it’s fascist logo. That’s about it.
