it's wild how web video players have so much better ux considerations than desktop video players. i tried a lot just now and gnome videos (totem) seemed the closest to being okay except that its speed function only goes from 0.75x to 1.75x in 0.25x increments?!!!

between downloading an entire batch of video files for local play vs watching it on some obscure hungarian streaming site, it's somehow a better experience to watch it on the obscure hungarian streaming site. how hard can it be to make a graphical frontend to mpv or gstreamer that works like youtube's player or something

dishonorable mention to vlc which somehow introduced graphical glitches and decode errors into a video file which otherwise worked perfectly fine in mpv and gstreamer based players

- parole is cute ui but doesn't have a speed option anywhere i can find
- celluloid also looks fine but also doesn't have an exposed speed option
- baka-mplayer seems okay but it starts up really weird aspect ratio and with part of the video hidden by an unnecessary playlist sidebar
- mpc-qt is probably the next best thing to gnome videos but the speed function jumps in 100% increments which is good for 200% but not 150 or 125 or 175
- etc etc etc
