sorry for contributing to the Spectacle but it strikes me how a lot of people’s identities and histories are not legible at first glance and there are no mechanisms for easily gathering any context. but that’s par for the course in social media because social media seems to be built on removing context. blogs and forums at least had context. “i’m reading this blog” or “i’m reading this thread”. now it’s all just Posts. and they’re being beamed into your skull by every single random bystander

some sociologists really highly value face-to-face communication because they think it’s inherently a better form of communication that tends to be more legible but i don’t actually think that’s the case, i think that legibility depends more on context, it just happens to be that with OnLine you have way more context available if you look, but no one looks. looking is a waste of time. it’s easier to just hit Post

so if you want to be understood then you need to frontload as much relevant context as possible. and you don’t have a good way to do that. best you can do is stuff 500 characters into a bio that other people may or may not read. and maybe you leave something out unintentionally or intentionally. anyway the point is, how are we expected to Communicate without any awareness of the Other except for what the technology affords us

ok no one in the target audience is gonna see this because i'm specifically avoiding tagging any people or hashtags but like. idk. i don't wanna actively get involved or reach out bc i feel like it'll get taken the wrong way. nothing to gain by doing so. i'm not going to change any minds. it's just an inconsistency that stuck with me. maybe if i knew those people or they knew me it would be obvious i mean no ill will, but eh. why risk that.
