this is a property of the reference, but it’s not enough to establish a `rel`ation
we might say <a type=application/activity+json> and that gets close enough to saying “this is a post”. but what does it mean to be a “rel=quote” or similar? can we even define that in a clear and meaningful way? is it a commentaryOn or citationOf instead?

@trwnh@mastodon.social I think of it as part of the quote post so that's where the meaning comes in. I'm making a new post, I'm the author, but I'm including some information in it that indicates I'm quoting something. I'm making a special kind of a post, a quote-post.
As for how the link gets displayed I don't have as much awareness to answer your question. at least in my client (Sharkey), there is noa
tag displayed because the quoted post is shown inline, in full. -

@trwnh@mastodon.social I took a look at the HTML and it's a mess, I don't think *key devs considered the most semantic way to display this. my post is rendered as an
but the quoted content is just a. There are links in the div to the OP and to the post URL but they are just plain
tags with nothing extra in them. sorry if I'm completely misunderstanding your question.

@smitten oh HTML is not the primary focus here, i’m thinking about it from a knowledge or description view. like RDF or link relations. “A isQuoteOf B” where “isQuoteOf” is currently not meaningfully defined. can it ever be? or is a “quote post” really just 5 or 6 separate semantic considerations in a trenchcoat (context, audience, notification, attachment, preview, and so on)
