      @cwebber I'm genuinely curious to hear anyone argue that it isn't. The OED defines it as "a close friend".

        @caesar @cwebber i once saw someone arguing "comrade" is male coded, so

        (somehow, close friendship is stereotyped as male, like how "fellow" became male-coded instead of gender-neutral. one could theorize it has something to do with how society sees "brotherhood" as the only acceptable bond between two males, because anything more would be Too Gay. on the other hand, bonds between two females are stereotyped as shallow or somehow worth less. and mixed bonds are Obviously not platonic)
