I think my new instance won't appreciate me migrating FuckableCars here...

I just migrated a community from Lemmy to Piefed using the migration feature, it worked quite well - Divisions by zero

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/45876492 [https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/45876492] > Context: > I tried to use the Piefed migration feature [https://piefed.social/post/667045] to migrate !barcelona@lemm.ee [/c/barcelona@lemm.ee] to !barcelona@piefed.social [/c/barcelona@piefed.social] > > https://piefed.social/c/barcelona [https://piefed.social/c/barcelona] now exists, with all the existing posts there, as well as the icon and description. > > It even moved some subscribers (there are around 100 now), from what I understand those were Piefed subscribers that got automatically moved. > > The one caveat is that from Lemmy instances, the community doesn’t have show old posts (see https://lemm.ee/c/barcelona@piefed.social [/c/barcelona@piefed.social] [https://lemm.ee/c/barcelona@piefed.social]), but if you were restarting a community from scratch you wouldn’t have access to your old posts anyway. > > This ensure that at least the posts are transferred to a community on an active instance, which is probably the main concern for lemm.ee [http://lemm.ee] communities at the moment.

Nice, good luck with the migration! I'll be keeping an eye out where to subscribe

Oh fuck it. I think I'll just stop using Lemmy when this instance shuts down. This is the part of the fediverse that really sucks. All the comments, saved posts etc are gone because why? A couple of guys couldn't handle a few troll messages? Sorry, if we want an independent site, away from the hands of venture capitalists, you're gonna have to tough it out and deal with a few nasty messages.

If you're talking about the saved comments and posts on your account, doing the data export comes with a JSON list of all the posts and comments you've saved

admins got burnt out from stress, and yes its also due to the significant uptick in trolls, and propagands spreading, hard to control all of it, with no automatic filters, like reddit.

Not a shoddy rep, just that it grew so large so fast with not enough admin volunteers. All of the big ones are constantly getting hit by these sad losers who need therapy

yea the purges from reddit, accounts for the sudden jump in users. and many of them were indiscriminately banned, plus now you have the increase of the trolls.

So then won’t this problem just move to another instance if .ee closes?

not really, lemmyee was more defederated, so it allowed basically anyone. the other ones have blocked off some of the problematic instances. ,ML, hexbear, grad users were all becoming too common recently i had to block them.

The thing I like most about lemm.ee is the defederation policy. Supposedly lemmy.zip is similar in that regard so that’s where I ended up.

they are fine, .ml, hexbear and lemmygrad has thier space for them. the problem is there were operating from there and trolling on lemmyee.

its not a few troll messages. most of the admins couldnt be replaced, i suspect moderation isnt thier only problem.

Unfortunately lemm.ee has been short staffed for mods for at least a year due to high turnover/burnout. The very thing that appealed most to me about lemm.ee, that it was still broadly federated and thus offered a truer fediverse experience, ultimately led to its downfall. ☹️

I’m now on a few different instances. I was not expecting do have to do something like this, but I understand.

Thank you very much to the admins and mods of lemm.ee. I was on there for at least a year or so, and I will definitely miss the open federation they had.

The data is all public and it's aggregated by a few websites that provide apis. You'd need some kind of tool for analyzing densely connected graphs, maybe load it all into a db and write queries for a start? Or some kind of visualization software

What happens to the communities and posts from those communities. Are they archived and accessible, or do they disappear once the instance goes down?
