#Mastodon plans to add the display of quote posts with Mastodon 4.4, and then to support authoring with Mastodon 4.5.
I hope the dev team has the courage to follow through with this plan because, amongst some Mastodon users (but not most), this will be the worst thing ever—despite Mastodon clients supporting quote posts, and software like Akkoma, Sharkey, and Friendica doing the same.
Ultimately, quote posts are a must. More people want them than don’t.

Currently, the way Threads does quote posts is directly tied to the actual link of the post.
If you post a link to another post on threads, you're automatically quote posting.
Also on threads is the ability to limit who can quote post you. Therefore if you try to link to a post that limits their quote posts, you can't.
If mastodon does this and I cannot link to certain things on my own website, I might just lose my damn mind.
