proposal to people coopting terms like “fediverse” or “social web” to just be honest and say you want a “united social media” or “united social network” instead. that’s what federation and bridging are in service of: grand unity within your envisioned “global town square”. it then follows that some people are maximalists trying to expand the network of networks until it covers everyone. it then also follows that some people are opposed to this when they say “fediverse” or “social web”.

at least when i say “social web” i am talking about the actual Web and not this ersatz network. i want to build links between resources, not “post” to a “profile”
and when people over the past several years have been trying to cultivate a grassroots anti-corporate space, they will not view Threads or Flipboard or Bluesky as “a victory for our cause”.
unfortunately whoever is loudest is whoever gets to claim the term. so maybe a more precise term for the personal side of fedi is in order?

far be it for me to openwash this all with the term “open social”; i would rather use the term “alt social” were it not for the mainstream offerings laying claim. can you really say “it’s not Facebook” when talking about a category that includes Threads?
a more explicitly not-for-profit anti-corporate network of people — what would you call that? what quippy or catchy name would you use?
