@xumbra hm, most likely the "reason" you would expect it to be "require follow requests" rather than "accept new follow requests automatically" is that other networks (twitter et al) tend to invert it in this way, where the "natural state" is to have follows not require approval. but for the fediverse, the "natural state" is to require approvals; it's just that mastodon can automatically approve requests on your behalf.it's also possible that "reach" is the wrong way to categorize this?

@mariusor @helge more re: the actor living on the server and state being stored on the server, imagine using proxyUrl (so that you are authenticated against your server), and your server can now inject whatever properties it wants. what’s difficult about this? what’s a “workaround”? if anything, the natural conclusion is to proxy everything through the proxyUrl endpoint if you are a client and you want to deal with state in any way, or use your actor in any way. proxyUrl is your interface.

@ConnyDuck @HugeGameArtGD it is possible for boosts to be considered their own posts, this used to be the case a long time ago in mastodon even. boosts had their own permalinks and could have their own replies. currently there’s some logic to make replies and boosts “pass through” to the original status, so there is no difference as such

@chris_hayes i guess a minimum viable flow would be an OAuth-like flow could work where you have entities request certain facts and you authorize those facts to be shared in a trust envelope. not very optimal but it seems like it would work for smaller cases and you could have checkboxes or toggles to select optional information being requested.i just wonder if there's a good way to have policies pre-made and auto-applied, or if this is "good enough". i suppose it's a matter of interface...

@ex_06 @julian although I am very excited about federation, due to my burnout and financial situation I haven't been able to pursue this feature and we dropped it from our NLnet grant. I'm hoping to dive into it again as part of a future 2.x release.

far be it for me to openwash this all with the term “open social”; i would rather use the term “alt social” were it not for the mainstream offerings laying claim. can you really say “it’s not Facebook” when talking about a category that includes Threads?a more explicitly not-for-profit anti-corporate network of people — what would you call that? what quippy or catchy name would you use?

@jalcine i'm not sold on island networks myself, but i am of the opinion that a single unified network is unsustainable. death to "global town square", let a thousand contexts bloom over its corpse. build blogs and forums and rooms and communities and so on. separate the broadcast from the messaging and discussing.
