Yeah, the instances that are most dedicated to fighting fascism and providing a safe space for lgbtqi+ and other marginalized groups are the "toxic" ones. Those are the instances that need to be contained so you can block them, huh? HMMMMMM....

What instance was that? And Hexbear is something like 80% or maybe even 90% LGBTQ, while not being explicitly an LGBTQ instance, so what exactly does it say about us when Western, still mostly white, mostly liberal instances defederate us? That we're suddenly queerphobic or that crackers be cracking?

Thank you, not just for showing respect and appreciation to the people behind Lemm.ee but because these posts are a magnet for the kind of trolls everyone should block before migrating elsewhere. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

The main problem would be that all the images disappear with it.

Of course, I could use an external host.

There's the fun of it, it all goes poof like a dream. It's an opportunity for lemeeeee people to truly let down their hair and fully be their own quirky selves for one brief moment.

Lol, no it wasn't. It was the place where the lowest-common-denominator ended up. My experience on more niche, tailored servers has been wonderful for thoughtful discussion and avoiding useless flame wars.

Thanks for saying this. We did see some hate coming from there whereas on more dedicated servers there's generally none of that.

Wherever you guys migrate, please stop concentrating the userbase around lemmy.world, that's exactly what we're trying to avoid with Lemmy to begin with. The best thing you can do is go to https://join-lemmy.org/ and choose a server that's not in the top 10 or so. This will also help avoid things like the admins/mods burning out

.wolrd is the only instance I have been able to stay on so far.

Every smaller one I try bans me for minor disagreements or wrongthink. They all feel like exclusive clubs that they don't really want people to join, but will then whine about low user numbers.

The larger spaces have admins that are more often held accountable and put on blast, it's just the nature of these kinds of spaces.

I'll be honest i don't get what people differentiate so much about instances. most of the time i don't even notice what instance people I'm talking to are from, what instance the community in browsing is from, what instance the meme I'm viewing is from... is it about the software you're using that you're so aware of these things?

That's why I was here. I've already made a few more accounts just to have backups in case this happens again, but I really really enjoyed how I could see most of the Fediverse, and could block with my own settings if I didn't like the way another instance was ran. I will miss it. :'-]

I'm in the same boat. I do not like defederation. So where do we go? Any other instance with the same openness? I don't know details about instances, but I know I'd like to avoid .world though.

Yup, most likely. And it's very ironic that they point to that when we got defedded over their admin trying to watch out for the interests of a moderator who would end up switching to a different instance when Ada took the same stances on pronouns that Hexbear had taken years earlier.

Assuming you're talking about moss (the admin, not the plant), she mentioned that they didn't try to leave because of anything due to neopronouns (and she mentioned this is the post).
It was because of Ada moderating communities as well, and being (in her opinion), overbearing.

FWIW, the migration was botched, and everyone's at !onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't hexbear also block LBZ? If so, why's that?

Community cultures, mostly, as trimmed and pruned by admins. Most instances I don't notice massive differences in, with a few exceptions.

Wasn't all of that done when some of the cis members of the community were getting extremely angry at Ada for the new pronouns moderation? Like, sure, they stated it wasn't because of the new pronoun position, but it seems pretty clear that Ada embraced a position that was closer to the hardline pro-trans position of Hexbear and it pushed a ton of people away.

And yeah, we have them defedded because of chasers in their 196 comm making our trans users feel unsafe.

They sound like they want to speak to the manager.

That's an unfortunate situation with slrpnk.net. Not having anyone able to physically access a server for weeks was really tempting fate, though.

Upon closer look, you guys didn't block them: hexbear.net/instances

Anyway, I don't think people were really pushed away from LBZ, it was just the 196 thing and a few people gettin banned for pissing themselves about neopronouns.

In any case, the 196 community wanted to stay, the alternate comm is more popular (by MAU) than the original.

There are some sites that show what instances are de-federated from that. People can use that as a guide as well, if there are instances they don't really want feeds from due to their underlying circumstances. They should also check the admins and modlog so they don't run into surprises later down the line.

You just made me realise a non-zero amount of people have this view and post/behave however they want - leading to instance closures and defederations

Probably people getting down voted like crazy for asking simple questions isn't really good for retention or growth. Late stage reddit behavior. Guess lemmy is going to speed run all of the downside of reddit.
