What a weird policy decision. I don't think the Fediverse needs artificial scarcity or austerity.
I wouldn't agree with it but I see why they do it. If you listen to the instance operators and comm mods talk a bit priority is they're trying not to just build another reddit. So occasionally instance devs get these ideas to try and deincentivise some of the toxic patterns reddit encouraged.

Piefed is built around social credits and a karma system that favors homogenization. Unfortunately all this kind of shit gets really messy at scale. I understand trying to organize the chaos, but I think the thing that works about Lemmy is mainly that it's small, overlooked, and by some good fortune the number of assholes is relatively low in percentage currently. I'm not sure it could ever scale well more than 5x without becoming a cesspool. Until the walls start to implode, keeping it simple and open is for the best. Piefed is chasing it's tail.
