Based on the registration applications, I think getting banned is a lot less common than people think. Most people are checking out the fediverse because of other problems on reddit, whether its the ads, bots, monetization related changes, hateful content, privacy concerns, manipulation, trump related concerns, etc
We do get the occasional "I'm here because I got banned", but the vast majority is "I'm curious about what this place is like".
Now isn't hard evidence on its own, but I'd also bet that when the first category joins, they're often looking for a place to vent about their ban. When the second category joins, they rarely announce their newness.

I know exactly why I was banned: I reported a few instances of disinformation in r/conservative, and the admins suspended my account for "abusing the moderation system".
Just to reiterate: the Reddit admins sided with the fascists to create a safe space for propaganda and lies, and kicked me off the site for attempting to report it.

I like this one! I used to use better reddit + rif + small community reddit (less than 2000+ total members on some communities). It was fun while it lasted. Now im here! Hope you all enjoy for a while. Speaking of which how goes the mesh @icedraktajino@startrek.website ? I have a new meshcore and tastic node that im hoping will get better reception.
While nothing ever lasts, I hope that the fediverse can give you all happiness while its here!

Middle left specifically mentions reddit, I'm not here because of anything to do with reddit. I'm here because I prefer open source platforms that preserve more privacy than proprietary ones that will eventually start asking for gov't ID.

That was a last winter project that kind of plateaued. I keep my everyday carry node with me and I built that NWS/EAS Alerter relay a month or two ago, but I've mostly been working on getting my PV system installed since spring.
