          @evan do you have any more information about what commitment is required, what it means to be a member, and the terms of reference of the group?

              @kim

              I can add them here!

              Commitment is minimal. I think joining the mailing list is highly encouraged, but otherwise there are no requirements for participation.

              There are two groupwide meetings per month, plus several monthly meetings of specific task forces. None are mandatory.

              Conversations usually happen asynchronously on GitHub issues or on the mailing list.

              The highest level of commitment is leading a task force, editing a report document, or developing a reference implementation.

                @kim being a member means that you have a say in the consensus decisions of the group. Especially if you are interested in how the ActivityPub protocol works, or how its extensions are defined, you can be part of guiding that process.

                It also means committing to let your contributions be used for the standard. So, if you come up with an idea as part of participating in the group, and that idea gets used and becomes part of ActivityPub, that's OK with you.

                  @kim

                  Some people have really restrictive intellectual property agreements with their employer or someone else, so you need to negotiate that first with whoever has that claim on your ideas.

                  This can be really uncomfortable for some Open Source developers whose employers don't know what they do on their lunch hour or nights and weekends!

                    @kim there is a charter for the group here:

                    https://swicg.github.io/charters/SocialWebCG-Charter-2025-02.html

                    There is a staging process here. It's how ideas and documents become more and more formal:
