Just search for @_followback in your Mastodon UI. Click the follow button there. (Don't try to follow from the profile page; it doesn't work yet.)
It will follow you back, and when you make a post with a hashtag in it, the server will boost your post from the appropriate hashtag.
When I saw this tags.pub I originally blocked the whole domain, I've unblocked it after reading your post. However, it was still boosting my posts even after blocking it, could you please advise. Thanks.

@evan @_followback Evan, can I do this through my mastodon client app, Mona? I just tried & it workedโฆ

@solarbranka that's surprising; I don't think that should be possible. I'll test it more thoroughly and let you know.

@jakebrake@ohai.social it's something I'd love to explore... for example, if my local library had an ActivityPub actor for every book in their collection, I could follow it to see when it comes back into circulation, etc.
If my city had an AP actor for every fixture, I could tag it to submit tickets when things break (broken water fountains, playground equipment, etc.)
Alas, this is not available yet. The only example I know of is the SFO Museum, whose collection is available over the fediverse

@julian @evan @njvack @dgfitch @skinnylatte @tankgrrl @Viss @ai6yr @mayintoronto
Wow that is just brilliant. I love how the SFO *airport museum* staff just went off and figured out how to track items (and planes visiting the airport!) and everything in a low-cost scalable way that totally plugs into the Fediverse. Neat!

Thanks a lot, appreciated.
Would you consider adding some profile images? Just so the automated accounts don't look bland and robotic.

@solarbranka yes, great idea!

@giantspecks @evan @jakebrake @mayintoronto This is what I want to know.
Expecting us to follow bot accounts to see hashtags is absurd. How many users are going to do that, especially if they believe that hashtags work the way we were told they do?
There has to be a better solution. #TagsDotPubIsAnUglyHack
@mlanger @evan @jakebrake @mayintoronto Considering "picking a server" is already a hoop that most average people won't jump through.
-
@mlanger @mayintoronto @giantspecks @evan @jakebrake I wonder if this "ugly hack" is, in fact, a test of a concept Evan hopes to propose to Mastodon for more elegant inclusion.

@deborahh @mlanger @mayintoronto @evan @jakebrake one can hope

@brooke what did you end up doing?
@evan ok my decision is that i cannot accept using a follow-based bot like that on my main account with the current single level of follower trust that ActivityPub allows.
Whether I happen to trust the current operator of the bot or not, that's not a level of trust I'd generally allow.
If in the future there's a way to let a bot follow my public posts without giving it access to my followers-only posts, then I'd allow it.
Thanks for soliciting feedback.

Followers-only posts are by definition not public. Tags.pub probably does not index and boost those. Perhaps you were thinking of unlisted posts, which are public?
-
@julian you're aware that this isn't about the specific bot's implementation at the moment but about the follow mechanism in activitypub? i'm blocking you now

Touchy. Banned.

@jakebrake @evan The thing I like about this specifically is that it's an opt-in global booster. So many bots currently boost without our consent.
@mayintoronto @jakebrake @evan I'm on a self-hosted single-user server and this is fantastic.

@hongminhee so, the good news is that I can use the Fedify CLI to do an authorized fetch for an actor, and the debug output shows that RFC 9421 signatures worked. ๐ฅณ The bad news is that the follow test still doesn't work. ๐ซค I'll keep trying and see what I can do.

@evan I read years ago that multi-word tags should be done in CamelCase, for the benefit of screenreaders. So when I take my posts, I'm careful to do so. It appears however that tags.pub lowercases all my tags.
I understand that it shouldn't create separate accounts for tags that vary only by capitalisation, but when creating a new account, why not preserve the capitalisation of the original tag?
-
@evan But here is a concern or maybe I am missing something. Every time I use a hashtag I get a boost notification from its account on tags.pub. This is excessive noise. It puts a burden on having to put a mute on each account?
