@Mastodon you don't have shit to say about that kind of thing, it's decentralized.
you shouldn't exist as a company

@Mastodon should you consider in the next mastodon/tooutsuite versions add tools to migrate from mastodon selfhosted instances to other selfhosted #fediverse instance alternatives (pleroma, Misskey, GoToSocial, Friendica, etc) to avoid problems with your future punitive guidelines?

@Mastodon Did I understand this right? Admins like @stux would need a permission to use the domain mstdn.social because it is apparently covered by the Mastodon trademark. You state further: "We will reserve the right to revoke permission at any time and for any reason.".
Is this entire thing satire or have the corporate overlords taken over?
EDIT: This will not be enforced for instances that existed before May 13, 2026.

@hisold not quite - stux is covered because mstdn.social was created in 2019 (I believe). We made the decision not to apply these guidelines retroactively to servers created before 13 May 2026 because revoking usage permission for a domain means the admin would need to destroy the server and start over. We did not want to do that!
That's also why we decided not to allow admins to use Mastodon in the main part of their server domain moving forward too. There are scenarios where we might need to revoke permission, and if it were to come to that, we would rather that decision does not mean destroying a community.

@haubles @stux @Mastodon Why don't you just put that disclaimer in the source code for the about section because it applies to any instance actually. You should have done that from the start.
When you install a package over winget it says it's licensed by a third party, not by Microsoft even if it is a official Microsoft package. That's just how it's done.

@Mastodon how's john btw?

@NullTheFool @hisold @Mastodon "Existing servers must include this disclaimer..." means they need to note they're not affiliated with Mastodon the company
Which... fine? It reads like "We tried being cool about this, and some bad actors were decidedly not cool. Now everyone needs our permission, which we can give for free, and revoke from people being shitty or deceptive"

@Mastodon Small nitpick: A top-level domain is usually refering to like .com, .net, etc. (The TLD), so mentioning "top level domain" in a way that implies "example.com" or similar, is a bit misleading in my opinion and should be more clarified.
