@bob Yes, as I explained in the blog post I am also more resigned to that fact, less frustrated. And it is a good kind of resiliency in a way.OTOH the application space that triggered my interest for ActivityPub in 2017 is still not feasible with current technology base, and - unless there's a change in direction - will not materialize either. The current fediverse has restricted its usefulness wrt the original promise in the specs.That said, I do enjoy microblogging et al, and here there was big success.

@julian Ahh, thanks Julian! That makes sense. That’s pretty much the same guidance I got from Claude and ChatGPT too. If I go for Apple at some point, I won’t be able to just wrap the site and call it a day. I’d need to build out more native functionality, and I’m not going to pretend I fully understand that path yet haha.

@stib Instance perhaps, but more likely to be due to the application used to integrate with the Fediverse, on the native webapps (for mastodon) the booster handle is NOT included when I hit reply on the boosted tootMight be a difference between Mastodon, GoToSocial, Pixelfed etc apps as well, how that software handles boosts, there are a lot projects that interact with the Fediverse in similar but still different ways

@julian yeah, heavy on people who look more at the 'growth hackability' coefficient and profitability, than moral compass or the amount of soul you have to sell.But there are roughly 2 crowds on HN. A sizable group is comparable to value-aligned folks you find here on the fediverse. They are the ones making critical notes, and ensure many of the good articles pop up on the front page.And as a humane tech activist it is relatively easy to 'bump' the positive messages that blissful unaware devs need to see, to raise awareness on things. Esp. if you are in Europe it is relatively easy to get things to the front page that highlight the big problems of our modern tech.

@thisismissem @deadsuperhero I was looking at #ForgeFed which is a very sizable #ActivityPub extension (constituting the "Code forge" app domain in app-centric view, but arguably "Software development" top-level business domain in a service-oriented fedi).The way that things are modeled here adheres more to the actor model where there's a Factory actor, which in turn creates resource actors that expose various sub-domains. For instance for the management of Issues and PR's there's a TicketTracker actor to obtain via a Factory actor on a forge instance. Though I'm not sure whether I'd modeled that in similar fashion, it is a fascinating direction where we focus much more on good protocol extension design.All in all AS/AP offers a very granular foundation that allows for very interesting architectures, if only we dare explore them and do not dogmatically stick to some engrained notion how "social media" ought to be. I see #SocialMedia as but a small subset of #SocialNetworking.
